脳卒中後の20年後の予後予測は、初回脳卒中の重症度、リハビリテーションや医療治療の効果、関連する医療状態の有無によって異なります。一部の患者は完全に回復し、健康を維持することができますが、他の患者は認知機能障害、運動障害、再発脳卒中や心疾患のリスクの増加など、脳卒中に関連する症状や合併症が継続する可能性があります。定期的なフォローアップケアと関連する状態の管理は、最適な長期的なアウトカムにとって不可欠です。
Stroke誌に掲載されたある研究では、20年間フォローアップされた脳卒中の生存者のうち、再発脳卒中や心疾患の既往がある人は死亡リスクが高く、心血管の健康を維持している人は生存と独立性の維持に良いチャンスがあると結論付けられました。
